ASLM Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Tsehaynesh Messele
The broad public health career of Dr. Tsehaynesh Messele has involved research, laboratory system development and management, emergency management, and high level leadership in the public sector. Messele currently serves as Chief Executive Officer of the African Society for Laboratory Medicine, a newly launched pan-African professional society dedicated to improving laboratory medicine throughout Africa. She previously served as Director General of the Ethiopian Health and Nutrition Research Institute (EHNRI) from 2004-2011 and as a senior technical advisor for the Federal HIV/AIDS Prevention and Control Office of Ethiopia. Messele initiated and led the development of the first National Laboratory Strategic Plan in Ethiopia, as well as its revision into a future integrated system plan. She has published and co-authored more than 60 publications in peer-reviewed journals and book chapters. In 2002, the Ethiopian Public Health Association recognised her work through the prestigious “Young Public Health Researcher Award” for outstanding performance in public health research. Messele earned her PhD in 2001 from University of Amsterdam.
